Hats, like these Easter hats in this vintage 1960 Seventeen magazine, were a major part of fashion in history. I get asked a lot about hairstyles to wear with vintage hats like this.
When I look at the images of the girls in purple with their perfect Easter headdress, my mind flashes to sweet 1950s photos of families standing outside in front of their family car in their best dresses and suits. Grandpa or dad insisted he get a picture of everyone before they headed off to church.

What happened to hats?
The formal versions of hats we see in vintage magazines have largely disappeared in everyday culture. Fashion historians attribute mass ownership of cars as a big reason for the slow disappearance of hats in society. As more people have become car owners over the last 100 years, that means fewer people walking or waiting at the bus stop as a part of the journey to a destination. The belief is that when a formerly functional piece of clothing becomes only decorative, it generally doesn’t last past a generation or two.
I live in Denver. There are hats everywhere here. The intense sun at such a high elevation and snow in the winter make head coverings a must. The biggest change really is that we have gone from well-made, long-term ownership fashion to fast, disposable fashion. Quality hats with structure and design have given way to beanies and baseball caps.

Wide-browed look for long hair
I know… calling this look long hair seems a little strange now, but, at this time, hair length was a little more nuanced. But you could totally make this look with long hair by creating a faux bob with a tutorial like the one in Vintage Hairstyling.
Pin-wheel bang… High-brushed in back
I had short hair many times growing up. It was freedom in hair form. The confidence it gave me was so different from the weight I often felt when I had long hair in between short hair cuts. You can see the confidence in the eyes of this girl. She is totally Watts. She’s wearing somebody’s future. That’s a reference to a movie called Some Kind of Wonderful, which should be on everyone’s much watch movie list.
Demi-long page boy bracelets the ear
Such simple beauty… Big rollers or a large curling iron and a faux bob with a simple cap hat… and ready for your portrait in your Sunday best.
